Introductions

The promotion and protection of human rights is at the heart of UK foreign policy. We are determined to pursue every opportunity to promote human rights and political and economic freedom around the world. Individual demands for a better life can only truly be satisfied in open and democratic societies.
The values we cherish inform our policy choices every day as we seek to increase Britain’s security and prosperity, and to protect British citizens overseas. With this in mind, I am delighted to introduce the FCO’s 2011 Annual Human Rights and Democracy Report.
